Anthony Burrill

Anthony Burrill is a graphic designer known for his typographic posters, including the famous ‘Work Hard and Be Nice to People’ print. His work often features an up-beat commentary on the world around him, something he developed during his graphic Design degree at the then Leeds Polytechnic and the MA he later completed in Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art, London.

British based Burrill has been added to collections at the V&A Museum in London and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York and has also been exhibited worldwide.

Examples of his work.

Both pieces of his work show his signature style of a muted back ground with a strong contrasting type in a clean format, as part of this style he often works with traditional methods of printmaking. The first image is an art print focused on one of the phrases that he feels should be given more value in todays society, the bold easy to read font is centred in the page with space all around so it sits comfortably on the page without feeling suffocated. I like the fact that the background is an off white as it isn’t as harsh as a pure white would have been, this makes it easier on the eye.

The second poster was done as an advertising campaign for the British library to highlight the lack of engagement with current affairs from the younger demographics. I appreciate the fact he has stayed true to his style so it can still be recognisable as his work, whilst moulding itself to the need rather than it being style over substance.
